According to Luke 17:27, Jesus supposedly said that people were “eating and drinking, and marrying and being given in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed all of them.” This was given as a presage of the Last Days.
Jesus might have added that many of these marriages were/would be plain wrong. How many millions of marriages end up in divorce now? And how many of these failed marriages are the result of extremely stupid choices of mates in the first place?
Two of my coworkers were talking about ex-spouses this morning. The first one was complaining (yet again) about “that bitch” who is his ex-wife. The second talked about his wife’s ex-husband, a total loser.
I couldn’t help but think that maybe these people weren’t exactly in their right minds when they got married. Am I supposed to believe that they couldn’t tell that their future spouses were a witch and an asshole? Really?
Granted, people are a lot more mentally-screwed than they used to be. One reason why marriages used to last is that people still had their heads on straight. But if you’re thinking of hitching yourself up to someone, theoretically for the rest of your life, shouldn’t you be able to discriminate well enough to avoid getting married to someone who will eventually cause you major anguish?
People obviously don’t use their heads enough to make such choices properly. Which is one thing (among many) that convinces me that the average human being really isn’t much better than an animal.
But of course, listening to your heart instead of using your head is so much more wonderful and lovely and beautiful!
